Chicken Cold

Hi, I'm a new chicken owner with a four month old Long Island Red that has a wheezing in her chest. There is no nasal discharge. She is still eating and drinking. No ruffled feathers.

She was sick two months ago with a severe case of coccidiosis. We pulled her through that, but she is half the size of her sisters and probably weakend from it. The only home remedy I have found online is two teaspoons of cider vinegar in a gallon of water. Thanks!

Probably something respiratory, I have one going through similar now. I am treating with Duramycin-10 and probiotics.

Well, my little sick girl made it through her cold. We gave her MRD medicine and she recovered after two weeks. She is growing quickly and is catching up with her sister.

Hello. I'm wondering what "MRD" medicine is. I've got a Silkie that just started showing symtoms today. Breathing hard, raspy, sneezing. No mucus or anything. Tried to keep him out of the wind from the hurricane (I'm in GA- not much storm, but 20 mph wind). Thought I did an ok job, but he got sick. Saw on here that they don't catch colds, that it's a virus that when get my whole flock. Very worried today.

The medicine I used was Tetracycline Hydrochloride Soluble Powder (Terra - Vet 10). The powder is put in their drinking water. It took a full week for my hen's symptoms to subside. I hope this helps.

Thank you! I think that's what's in the medicine that I've ordered. They are all ok now (got better as I waited on the med) I have to wait a week to give it to them as a preventive, because I used Sulmet in the water until it got here. Thanks for the tip

Thank you for the link on fungal infections. I've heard a couple of my birds sneeze in the last few days, and the first thing I thought about was the mold I just noticed growing on the inside of the coop.....Mold is a fungus. I sprayed it with vinegar and the next weekend we plan to dry it out with a portable shop heater and spray paint the inside of the coop....just how I wanted to spend my weekend!

Something else i would do for the first sign of colds & sneezes is to change their water to electrolyte and vitamins for a day or 2. When the fall weather does its wide swings of decent days but dips way low at night i sometimes have a few catching a cold.....check the coop for good ventilation and freedom from drafts. ( mine are open but have sides that keep the birds from breezes.) Having the ability to place the affected birds in a warmer area for recovery will often help so they aren't using extra energy to try to keep warm too.
