Chicken coop build 8’ x 20’

It was another day near 100. We are a 2x2 short of finishing the framing of one of the side walls. We have a nesting box on both of the side walls. It’s very complicated stuff these nest boxes. Haha. How tall, how far off the ground, does it need a lip, etc. We are doing lots of research it seems on every single decision. Roosts have to fit above the nest boxes and then there’s the ventilation. So many measurements and it’s all connected like a giant puzzle. View attachment 3202420
I'd be making luv to the AC.

Yeah, those full time jobs of ours are super inconvenient. We only have 3-4 hours in the evening heat to work. Today is a day off for my husband 😊. He got up early and worked on the other side wall of the coop. EEB09408-8FCB-42EA-92D5-F36D5CF51F92.jpeg
We can’t finish the framing of the upper windows without a trip to Home Depot, which we’ll do this evening when it gets hot and I get off work. Moving on to the last coop wall 😁.

Any specific reason for the unconventional framing? Standard framing has the 2x4 on edge.

I don't clean constantly. I put a bale of shavings in each coop, and 3 months later, I sweep it into the run and replace with new shavings.
I just started doing this...
As I had intentions of doing deep litter..but based off advice here...really shouldn't do so in a wood coop...so I just moved it to their run lol

Husband says once the plywood goes on it will make more sense. I think he also looked at Carolina Coops and that was how they framed their coop walls. He also said it would have been easier the other way, but the aesthetic will look nicer.

Inside wall framed.

Heading out to foundation to lay hardware cloth before setting walls.

It definitely has to be harder to frame in like that, but it does look cleaner.

Walls are up.

We ran out of u shaped staples so will tack the rest of the hardware cloth to the foundation tomorrow. Done for the day. We should be able to get the framing done for the run portion tomorrow.

Also, husband mentioned that he is sandwiching the hardware cloth in between 2x4s so that goes into the way things were framed.

We are baby stepping our way through this. Run walls were cut this morning. I’ll drill pocket holes after work today. We are figuring out the run door. I want to be able to bring a wheelbarrow inside so my husband is figuring that out. The door will go on the end. While I’m drilling pocket holes, he’ll build the nest boxes.

I doubt we’ll get the run framing up tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

This is a lovely record of your build. When you've finished you need to write up a coop article and enter it into the coop page contest (there's one every year).
