Chicken Coop Litter Trays

poop trays are like poop boards that many use. Sprinkle the board/tray with sand or PDZ and scoop with kitty litter pooper scooper (or similar) to remove poop. Allows you to go longer before replacing the bedding in the coop. However, if you are getting a coop that is as large as the picture seems to indicate, and it is walk in, you may likely find that you actually prefer to scoop poop inside your coop, rather than standing in the wind/rain/snow/whatever while scooping poop. Besides, how will the poop tray be supported while you slide out and scoop? With smaller coops sold for fewer birds, its not a problem as the tray (or trays) is/are smaller, but beyond 2x2' or similar trays, it would get unwieldy pretty quick.

Lots of different ways to do poop board/trays:

I think I have a handle on how the deep litter method works- but can I ask how you care for the litter trays? Are you lining them with pine shavings? How often do you empty them etc. Thanks so much!
I use pine shavings for my coop floor, I turn it about once per week and top off with fresh shavings every now and again. Sometimes I take like a third of the shavings out and dump them right in my run for the chickens to spread around and then add fresh shavings. As for the poop trays I use Sweet PDZ and a kitty litter scooper to scoop the poop, mostly every day but some times I skip a day or two. Then I just dump the poop in my compost pile. I hope this helps.
