Chicken coop plants

Many years ago with my first chickens I planted muscadine grapes along the back fence of two pens that shared a fence line. I let the plants get pretty well established and placed rolled wire, similar to a tomato cage all the way across the bottom of the fence covering the roots. The chickens occasionally enjoyed fresh tendrils/shoots, the fallen grapes (which is why I planted them to begin with), and kept the vine trimmed to an exact height all the way down on both sides that would make a landscaper jealous. They lounged in the shade of the leaves in the wire tunnel during the heat of the day and took occasional dust baths there as well.

In the same pen I also have a plum tree and a peach or a nectarine. I forget which now. So long as the chickens were prevented from actually getting up into the tree they were quite safe. If they could reach the lower branches, leaves and fruit were fair game. I plan on planting some similar fruiting plants in and near my current chickens.

I have a lot of banana trees and sunflowers in my coop. I put a milk crate over the sunflowers until they established. The birds don't care about the banana trees but they do eat the petals that fall off the flowers.
