In which I will attempt to note our progress and results making a
coop using plans from My Pet Chicken.
My son works at a nursery and had access to pallets. My husband has
some building skills and I really want
a coop!
Day one: Broke apart my first pallet. Wasn't too bad. Only split one board
Have a bad backache now, but vacuuming the house can give me
a backache so that's not too surprising.
I'm not sure how many of the boards will be useable. Will post pictures as
work progresses.

You didn't ask, but I come up with a nice way to take them apart fast and with minimal splitting but your boards will be a couple inches shorter. Use a circular saw ("skil saw") and cut just inside the nail line on the outer boards. Then you only have the inner one to pull nails out of. Speeds it up tons, and those outside nails are the ones that cause most of the splitting. Others sometimes use a "sawzall" or "saws all" or wrecking saw but those waste lots of wood and never give a clean wood cut.

And I thought I was meticulous! But well, it's over 100 here so I give myself a "bye" - dont' want to be in the heat that long.

My husband inspected my work, approved my progress, said
he is looking forward to seeing the boards stack up. But,
then laughed and my methods and said I wasnt letting the
tools do the work. His work will be later, when he has to give
me a back rub!

I just got done reading through your project, your coop is MUCH
bigger than mine will be. But mine only needs to house about
6 bantams. The doghouse they have now EVERYONE HATES.
In the summer they sleep outside, they won't even go in
it in the winter. I have to trap them in when it is freezing.
Hopefully, they will appreciate my efforts.
