Chicken coop

I used to dirt and all. I just put in a shovel size or do you mean all the way across the bottom.
The chickens like to dig at the grass eat the bugs and small rocks.

I put all the grass clippings I rake each week in the chicken run. I also add the weeds pulled from the garden and flower beds, yes, dirt and all. Don't see why you couldn't put that inside the coop as well. what they don't eat will dry out

I don't think so cause it will begin to break down and stick and get mildew. I'm curious r what others say though, so let see....

We've put grass in flower beds , it can get rotten and smell bad. I would think you'd have to rake it or stir it up while it drys.sprinkling sweet wheat or DE would help it dry out

I wish I took pictures of the before. I added 4 stuffed bags of lawn clippings in a big pile in the run. I went back 4 hours later, and you almost couldn't tell they had ever been there. After a couple of days, there's no trace of them.

Everyone's putting yard waste in the RUN she asked if she could put it in the COOP!
Wouldn't it depend on air flow in the coop??

well I mentioned I don't see why it couldn't be put in the coop as well. It won't take a lot of work, they'll keep it turned. If the coop has adequate ventilation to start with, it shouldn't mildew or get sticky, the chickens will make pretty short work of it actually, as shown by MIMS's post. anything green goes in there with mine, it disappears pretty quickly as well.

next time I weed my garden or rake grass clippings, I'm going to put some in the coop itself and just see, I'll post pics. I need some more bedding in there anyway, and since I already prefer to use hay, don't see why it would matter if I put it in green, except I suspect they'll eat it before it dries out
