I'm new to this but would like to have my own chickens, the thing is, have no idea how to build a chicken coop, and been trying to look on the web for plans but every time try to buy ione don't go anywhere, can somebody help me with this matter, also what is the best type or race of chicken for Florida, thank you.

When my husband and i decided to build a new coop, i sat down with a paper and pencil and starting drawing.
Walls, roosts, nest boxes, windows, and doors.build it on paper first. We build with all reclaimed materials.
It also is going to depend on how many chickens you want to have. This determines the size.
I know this site has a coop section. Also you could just look at images on the web to get an idea of what you want.
Keep in mind you want it easy to clean, good venilation, and user friendly.
Secure for your birds at night is a must.
Welcome to backyard chickens!

You should add your location in your profile so it's always there.

Most of the plans you see on the internet are not really a good coop design but made to be cute.

Some basics:
  • put the roost higher than the nest box
  • good ventilation
  • large enough for humans to go inside and clean
  • predator proof enclosure (chicken wire is not)

You can also convert a shed into a coop. That is what I am doing.
I extended my roof lines so I have a large overhang all the way around it, placed windows where I wanted them, moved the doors, install poop board, roosts, etc.
You can look on Craigslist for used sheds then hire a shed company to move it for you if you find one. I got an 8x8 for free to use for my new garden shed as I am using my old 8x16 for the new coop.
