Chicken coops

Hello all,




I was wondering if anyone knows which brand of coop is best. Does anyone know a specific coop that is good for confined keeping. All of the chickens I plan to get are bantams. Is Summer Hawk Ranch a good brand?(http://summerhawkranch.com) It had one of the best ratings on Amazon above other coops listed.


I would really appreciate anyone who can help me.

I have built all of my coops but one from scratch. From experience, I would get a coop that has windows or some light that is able to come in, the coop is able to be moved if it has a run so that your birds will have fresh grass (not including the winterXD) and that they're not in a dirt pen. When you get your birds, I'd get a wire bottom coop so the poo falls through instead of getting matted onto the wood. If not that, then make sure there is shavings in the coop and clean it out regularly.

Personally, I'm a fan of using a shed as a coop - much cheaper than a bought coop and more flexible as you can change the internal design to meet your changing needs. I think asking about coops is akin to asking "what's your favourite colour" - we all have different experiences and ideas, but the coop section may also give you inspiration to think outside the box a little.

To be honest, we bought a coop from Chicken Saloon. It was "sized" for 6 to 8 birds (regular size). Two things; one, while t arrived with several broken parts they did replace them within the week (good!) and two, I would not put more than five birds in it. Most of the coops I've seen seem smaller than I'd like. When we put the coop together we also used wood glue on all parts to give extra strength and we used water sealant (natural for safety) and coated it twice. I recommend doing both.

We placed the assembled coop (which holds our five chickens) inside a 144 square foot run. The run has landscape fencing down to 12" below ground and reinforced with rebar to prevent predators from getting in or burrowing under. We also have a chicken wire 1/2 roof with a solid roof on the other half to prevent food from getting wet and so the birds have a weather-safe area.
