Chicken Coops

Whoa!... Wait a minute... "Thorin Oakensthield" ? Who is that hen named after? ... Sounds like a great original name though. Well I am making a dismal discovery... my present "broody" that I told you about is not a broody , but is probably eggbound... she will not (or can't) "settle down" even in a nest box... has to stand all the time... just like the last hen I had with the same condition.... My son (has chickens) told me to write her off, she will die... The first one I had died in spite of pretty heroic efforts to save her.... It's a brown sexlink hen, and the other eggbound fatality I had was brown also... maybe some connection... I will try to save her anyway... Thirteen degrees this am, was as low as 9 during the night, Coop stayed at 19 degrees... not bad, hens can take that. Can't wait for warmer weather, it's been super cold since late Nov. Gotta go, woodstove requires a transfusion, uses a wheelbarrow full of wood every day..... thanks for the photo of Thorin O. ... ps: Is that a kero lamp you have in the photo ???

Oh no - another eggbound hen? That is dreadful to watch them suffer. Have never had to deal with that particular problem that I know of, although I have a friend who has lost one and saved one. She brought the hen inside and sat in a steamy shower with her.

Thorin Oakenshield was the leader of the dwarves in J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" - one of my favorite books.

And the purple thing is a small waterer - a little screw on cap with a 1 quart jar. I use it for raising chicks in the house, and for hens on sick or maternity leave.

Nope, the name is from a movie - and I can't remember for sure which one but I think it was one of the original Hobbit movies - I had a dog with the same name.

Edited to add: Oops, I see Kateseidel beat me to it!
