I just noticed several ads on LSN for several different breeds of chickens and looked them up on the web...the photos from their farm look nice. My daughter is thinking of adding a few hens to her small flock but I'm torn about how to go about it. She normally gets chicks and raises them and that may be what she'll do this time...she just needs 4 or 6 more hens though. Our flock is very healthy and we have no problems with any of them. I sure don't want to risk bringing in any disease or parasite into our girls. I know there are many people like us that genuinely care about their birds and strive to keep a healthy, happy flock...however I also know there are folks around that will do anything for a buck and have no regard for their birds (not implying that this farm does that at all). We've had hens for years and never had a problem with illness....sure don't want to start now.
I went to chicken creek today. She had most of the chickens in the basement. I saw maybe 2 dead birds and a couple with icky bums. But, overall the birds were in good condition. I got a barred rock, an ameraucana (prb easter egger) and a gold laced wyandotte that are all about a month old. They all seem happy and healthy expect for the little easter egger. She has been lying down a lot, but it was a long car ride home. She was the first to find the food so hopefully she will be fine. I got to see one of her roosters that she had in a pet carrier in the basement. He was huge! I wasn't able to see any of the other adults on site.
He really is huge, isn't he, lol. He is sweet though. The chickens were moved to the basement during this heatwave. Terribly hot here and they were afraid the heat would kill them all.
