Reckon why a chicken just dies? I feed my chickens this morning and at the BB Red pen they were running around like normal. When I opened the door they came up to meet me just like always. Late this evening I was doing yard work and my daughter comes running up to me and screaming that one of the chickens is dead. I walk over to the pen and sure enough one of my BB Red hens is laying on the coop floor dead. It just makes me wonder why?

I'm so sorry for your loss, unfortunately a lot of times you'll never know. Chickens can have a whole range of disorders including cancer, internal issues and a whole range of diseases. It's their natural inclination to try to appear ok, even if they are in pain, so many times if they are sick, they don't let you know it until its too late. If you're worried that the dead hen had something communicable or a problem that may affect the rest of your flock, you can get a necropsy done to identify the cause of death. Many times a local university with a husbandry/farming program or some local agencies will do them for free or a very nominal charge.
