My chicken behaved normally but suddenly yesterday she looked tired, her comb was a little purple and she wouldn't eat. A few hours later she was dead with a dark purple comb.

Today we opened her abdomen and out came a brownish green liquid with thicker parts like on the spoon in the photo. It felt a bit swollen before we opened up, but not at all as swollen as I've seen in pictures online of chickens with swollen abdomens.

She was 11 months old. She stopped laying a few weeks ago, and one of my other chickens (same age) did too. I was told that it was due to the hot weather which sounded reasonable to me at the time, but now I don't know. Otherwise she seemed healthy, her eyes, ears and mouth looked normal and I didn't notice anything else that was different than normal.

My questions now are what happened to her and should I be worried about my other chicken who stopped laying as well? She is the head of the flock and was super energetic today as usual. I did feel the tummy on all of them but I haven't really done that before so I'm not sure where the baseline is supposed to be. I think my head chicken had a bit of a swollen tummy but it may very well just be me seeing dangers that aren't there since I never thought about how her tummy feels normally.

I'm sorry for the gross photo!

I have had several hens who had yellow to amber colored fluid from the abdomen, which is ascites or water belly. But I have never seen such a gelatinous liquid before. I would suspect possible egg yolk peritonitis or liver disease, but a state poultry vet who does necropsies would be a better authority. What state are you in? Does your state have a poultry college where you could email pictures? Did you look at her organs or get pictures? Sorry for your loss.

Thank you for responding! Some of the thicker pieces had yellow in them which made me think of egg yolk peritonitis as well. But looking at egg yolk peritonitis photos, I don't find any that are as green as mine. If it was egg yolk peritonitis, should I be worried that my other one has that as well since she also stopped laying?
