Hello!

My first time posting here.

Went out to the coop this morning and one of my buckeye hens was laying on the coop floor under the roosting bars. I thought she died but she has barely breathing when I picked her up. I brought her inside because she was very cold and weak. I held her for little awhile. She perked up a tiny bit. She seemed to like that. I put her inside a dry bath tub, warmed up towels, started a hair dryer on low. I sat her back in my lap with a towel and the hair dryer a bit. She started flapping her wings and jerking erratically for a few seconds, so I gently sat her on the floor beside me in case she was scared (we got these buckeyes when they were older and they weren't handled as much as our others as chicks, so they don't usually like being held as much). After maybe 10 seconds, she went limp and passed away.

Any ideas here?

I have 13 other chickens (Buckeyes, RIR, and Sussex). All of the others seemed fine. This sweet girl seemed fine last night when I went out to the coop. Everyone was up on the bars together.

So sad about this! It was cold here last night, but we haven't had any issues before. Like I said, the coop is in our barn. They free range during the day as they want because the coop has a door I open to outside each morning. Everyone else is out and doing all their normal chicken things.

Thank you 💗💗💗

I'm sorry for your loss. It might have been a heart problem or a seizure.

Again I'm sorry. Had a rooster die of a heart attack before.. it's pretty quick when it happens.

So sorry for your loss. How old was she? Did she lay eggs? It sounds as though she was dying, and you were able to comfort her as she went. The flapping is common when they pass away. Some also have a twisting neck as they go.

If you still have her body, you could keep it cool and take it in to your state vet for a necropsy, to find a cause of death. What is your location? Here is a list of state vets, and you can call them to learn how to get a necropsy:

As far as I know she was still laying. I think she was roughly a year or so old. We got 5 buckeye hens from friends last year who needed to down size a bit. They couldn't remember exactly how old they were when they got those buckeyes. I am in Ohio.
