chicken door opening

What’s the smallest size door opening into the roost area you’d do with standard sized chickens plus roo? Trying to keep my egg eating dog out of there, and she fits through an 8 1/2 x 12” dog door for sure.

I am thinking 8x10”?

I think my door is about the size you are hoping to do. It stopped my goats,( but not my egg eating dog.) My roos squat a bit, but don't hesitate to use the door.

Probably better to confine or tie the dog than try to force the chickens to squeeze through a tiny hole.

You could end up with the dog getting stuck or hurt.

I think we’re ok with about an 8x10 opening. Doggie is 65 pounds and seems very aware her egg sneaking days are over, and chickens seem happy.

@Yardmom we just got goats! They have a separate pen but my two littlest pullets can fit under their fence and hang out with them. I think they’ll be too big to do that in a couple more weeks, but it is giving them space away from the older hens for now.
