My husband and I are building a coop, and everything was perfect until he went rogue and cut a giant hole in the floor for the chickens to get into the coop. I told him the general placement, and because he put the ramp at too shallow of an angle, he wound up with a super long hole so the chickens wouldn’t hit their heads.

My concern now is that this gaping 10” x 27” hole won’t keep the coop insulated enough. What do you think? Start over or leave it?

It will be fine. The wind shouldn't be blowing straight up from the ground creating drafts and heat rises anyway so I wouldn't worry about lack of insulation on the floor. You probably don't need to insulate your coop at all in TX anyway.

I don't think it looks too bad. I'd have maybe done it so it comes up in a corner or at the side. It might be an idea to put a raised edge around the opening to stop bedding and such falling down.

Is that the people door on the side there? You could use the board he cut out to cover the hole at night, if you wanted to make the coop insulated and more secure.
