I have a buff orpington down; she cant walk, although there is some movement of the muscles, but she seems to have no real good control of ther legs. She has diahrrea real BAD; its red and the anus(?) looks like a volcano. Poop was green and liquid, but now its green and more solid.

My dealer said there is bad coccidiosis going around (I am in So Cal), and I am trying treatment with a sulmet solution, but not sure if its working. The hen can eat and drink, but the increasing inflamation of its rear is taking a toll.

I dont know how much longer I can care for her; also without knowing really what the problem is its hard to treat.

Definately sounds like cocci. Isolate her now from any other birds and keep a good eye on the others. Cocci symptoms would be 1st puffed feathers, little movement then blood in the poop.

How do you know if she is getting better? So far no blood in poop. She has been under treatment (hand feeding food, water) for almost a week now, and I try to rinse off the poop, and she is now in separate small cage in my greenhouse where I have radiant floor heat, so she is toasty. How long does it take a chicken to fight off a bug?

This is my first attempt at raising chickens, started with 4, but down to 2 healthy ones and the sick BO.

Ok, now I'm not sure it's cocci. I thought when you said "she has diarreha bad, it's red" that you meant there is blood in it. After a week on Sulmet she should be doing better.

Hang on and maybe someone with more experience will post. What are you feeding her now?
