Chicken eating eggs

Welcome to BYC as a posting member!

Egg eating hens is a myth actually. chickens are opportunistic eaters and will eat things, including each other, if the conditions are right; like blood on a flock mate.

With egg eating, the problem is usually eggs that break. They will eat the broken egg because it looks tasty! It is best to figure out why the eggs are breaking. You may have noticed that the egg shells are not as hard as they have been.

If so, check into parasites- mites, lice and worms. Then look into vitamins like vitamin D and and calcium

Welcome to BYC. Whenever one of mine has a problem with thin shelled eggs or a shell-less egg, the other hens will grab it and eat it. That sometimes gets a few started eating eggs. Just make sure that yours are getting layer feed, plus most people have crushed oyster shell available to them to keep shells strong. Some hens will still lay thin shelled eggs, even after that. It helps to gather eggs shortly after laying at intervals to prevent them from lying around the nest box, and tempting the nosey ones to peck. There are special nest boxes that roll the egg to the back as well.
