I add 4 new hens and a roo to my flock and the hens are laying. One hen and I have not figured out which one layed and egg that has a wrinkled up egg shell. being a novice I did not know to throw it out. I put it under my broody hen who set the egg for one day and it burst. I moved her and the other eggs to a new and clean nesting box. What should I do about the eggs that I moved since I know they probably got some of the bad egg on them?

Thank you, I did not find a yolk in this egg. Just clear liquid but that is still probably just as bad. She is not going to be a happy sitter.

I read that article about the egg shell forming. I have adjusted these new to me hens diet to what I feed my existing flock and I have had no problem with my existing flock and they give me 12 eggs a day. I do not know what these new birds were eating of how they were cared for. I just got them Monday and I have them in a separate pen from my older flock. I will see if this egg problem persists.

Keep in mind that the fertilized eggs you still keep/have will have the rotten bacteria from the egg that exploded, so there will be a smaller hatch rate, even with the broody.

I cleaned up the mess in the nesting box, and put new bedding in that box, but I move her to another nest, and put two fresh eggs from two of my other hens in there with her. I put all the eggs that were in the nest when the egg burst and put them in my compost pile. She looks happy with her two new eggs.

Great job! Unless they have unrelated problems, the new eggs should hatch well!
