I have a Barred Rock and a RIR both laying eggs. For the last week or so, every time I go to check the boxes I find an egg from one of them (not sure which) that has a small hole in the pointed end of the egg with some strange lines around it. It is never broken through the membrane, and the broken piece of the shell is always there, so she is not eating it. I will post photos of the egg with this post.
Has anyone seen this before, that can shed any light on the situation?

It looks like it's hitting the floor of the nesting box when it comes out of the hen. Put more straw or whatever you put in there. If that doesn't work go to Ace hardware and get a role of shelf liner, the thick one with tiny holes, very spongy about $5 bucks. Cut to size and place on floor of box under nest material.
Also shell looks a little thin, get some crushed oyster shell and put in a separate container near the feed. GC

Welcome to BYC @jsherman75212 !!

Hard to know if it was formed that way or happened after laying.
Does look a bit thin.
Could have hit hard nest bottom or been pecked out of curiosity.
How old are birds?
How long have they been laying?

My girls are 18 weeks yesterday. Two of the girls laid their first egg last weekend. I have 10 eggs from them so far. Waiting on their sisters first egg. GC

The two characters in question are about a year old. I put some wood shavings in with the hay and yesterday I got eggs with no holes. If the trend holds today, then it was just a bedding problem
