The natural grit in typical soil will do the job, especially if you add some sand or gravel which is helpful in many cases to combat mud *anyway*. As long as they can scratch and peck around in a decent area of ground, they'll be fine.

I think the fact that their covered run has round river stone as the floor would maybe do the job. I give some credence to the term "all cooped up" and they might need to manicure in house during the cold winter months!
