Has anyone tried putting metal on the outside coop wall with an entrance the hens could fly up to? Predators couldn't climb the metal ?
Would owls go in?

If the pop hole is low enough for heavy breeds to fly up to it is low enough for a laundry list of predators to get in.

The only sure way to protect the birds at night is to use a solid pop door with raccoon proof lock and I prefer the lock to be on the inside but realize that's impractical with a lot of housing set ups.

Coyotes can jump 6ft fences and owls can get in if the top is left open. I use poultry netting over the top of my run to keep out predators

Well thank you both. I kinda didn't think it would work either but it was worth a try.
