I grew up in the country and had chickens. When I got married, I moved away from the country. I am back in the country again. I knew I wanted chickens but wanted to settle in a little. My son's co-worker was trying to get rid of a rooster, so we took him. He's a Golden Laced Wyandotte named Rufus. The same co-worker found out she had another rooster that she needed to give away, so we took him too. He is a Barred Rock named Sam. It took about 5 minutes to determine that Sam is a very dominant rooster and Rufus is a "chicken". We made a deal with the co-worker that if we took the roosters, she would give us a hen. She is a Golden Laced Wyandotte named Consuela. This past weekend, we went to an auction and came home with 2 roosters and 6 hens. They are all Barred Rocks. The first three are about 5 months old and the new 8 are about 2 months old. We are keeping the little ones separated from the big ones, but they have been introduced. All of the chickens are in pens during the day while we work, but we let them out and they are free-range until their bedtime every night. So I went from being chicken-less for about 30 years to having 11 chickens. I have learned so much from this website. Thanks to everyone.
