Chicken Farmer Teaching Others How To Raise Chickens!

Welcome to BYC, and good luck in your search for a solution.
Hello and welcome to BYC!

Kerosene fumes are no doubt lethal to chickens delicate respiratory systems. As @Debbie292d brought up, solar and solar charged batteries might be the way to go.

Good luck!
Way back when I was a kid ( :old ) kerosene heated brooders were commonly used by local farmers. You have me wondering how they were vented.

I suppose if they were vented well, kerosene heaters would work. I do know that kerosene fumes are dangerous for human lungs, I would think they'd kill a chicken!

What a generous and interesting project you have!

Here is a description of a homemade incubator made with old cabinets. it might be possible to use some of the design to create an incubator in Liberia, though it's made assuming "current!" The design includes structural design that helps move the air through the space.

Here is a description of a solar design of a homemade incubator in video from YouTube. Very low tech! It just uses a bowl of rice husks, and a pricked clear plastic cup set in the sun. In my area, near Boston, MA, we might not get strong enough sun for it to succeed. But in Liberia, I think you'd have plenty of sunshine!

I think I’ll look into this. Thank you for the idea. I did find out that kerosene is not readily available, and is thus very expensive in Liberia.

I have heard of a paraffin incubator. Using what resources they have available there, will be what works. I will keep everyone posted, when I find a solution that works.

And yes, we take too much for granted here in the States! Not thinking it thru clearly enough, I asked for and received two donated electric Harris incubators and took them with me this past June in my checked luggage.

I was embarrassed when it dawned on me that solar energy had to be continuously available 24/7 for 21 days. It is not. While I was there with several friends, we lived completely off the grid. During the hottest parts of the day, we lived without the comforts electricity provides most of us spoiled Americans!

The only way I can make these mission trips there and back is thru lots of prayers, donations, and fund raisers, then more prayers of thanksgiving before I see the results!!!

If someone is hungry for knowledge, and I have some of the knowledge, I will willing do what I can to help. The men and women there are hungry for the know how to raise livestock, and plant crops on the same tract of land season after season.

If anyone is interested, and it is allowed here, check out Farming God’s Way. There is much work yet to be done in 3rd and 4th world countries. Lord God willing, and with HIS provisions, I plan to return to Liberia next Spring, and beyond, as the Lord wills. Thank you everyone!!!
