It's been 8 years+ since our family raised chickens in So Cal. We r now in pre-coop building mode and planning. Due to critters we HAVE to enclose 'em. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi Bippy!

You might want to check out the coop building thread for more information.

The best advice I received when I started? Overbuild a Fort Knox and you won't have to worry. Hardware cloth is the best for predator protection, making sure every conceivable entry point is covered. Bury it down in a trench 18" or flare it out in an apron to prevent digging in.

In the desert, you'll also need a lot of shade, plenty of waterers, and a coop with great ventilation.

Good Luck, and

I agree with Friday Yet, overbuild & use 1/2 " hardware cloth. Cover the top of the run to keep raptors & climbers out.

PS make sure all coop & run gates/doors have solid locking systems - I would suggest two different kinds. That will hopefully outsmart preds that are good with their paws.
