How much luck have you had chicken farming? I'm looking into it and want to make it worth my while. Thanks!

In Ohio, a person can process some large # of chickens and sell processed carcass from doorstep without interference. But, sell beyond that (doorstep or #) then there are regulations/inspections, etc.

But, selling live chickens is one option. I’ve sold 4-5 month old cockerels and older at livestock auction ...usually around $10 each, but 25% commission to auction house. Never sold meat chickens there, so no info on those prices.

selling organic eggs Can be profitable in a big city if selling pretty colored and organic (or similar type) eggs...but to sell outside of doorstep, like at farm market/to grocery/to restaurant, takes inspection and oversight. Some people develop a customer base for eggs and those customers come to you to pick up.

some make money selling chicks, but need full breed to do it and possibly get money. I hatched and sold mixed breed chicks -straight run- at auction. In June sold for $1.75 each, July $1 each, and August $2.25 each. Not bad for barnyard mixed straight run in the summer. But, depends on who is at the auction to buy your animals.

Define this, please.
Number of birds for what purpose?

The term 'farming' is widely misused, many folks with a few birds for eggs in the backyard think they are farming.
I'd say around 50 chickens. Refer to earlier posting about the purpose. I don't live on a farm and when I say 'farming' I mean farming the chickens. Not a barnyard full of animals.
