You dont NEED anything else but the chickadees do like some treats. Scratch grains, cracked corn, grass clippings, and sunflower seeds are good treats they like.
I want to make my eggs and chooks as healthy as I can so they have their crumbles, but in addition they get greens like spinach and and whatever we have veggie wise thats scrap or left over. They got broccoli stumps yesterday. They have a high concentration of boss in thier scratch, and they get weekly treats for health like yogurt and sardines. The yogurt keeps their tummies in good shape and the sardines are a high protein treat that is also high in omega 3...plus the oil they are in gives them some fat calories in the cold. I am also sprouting some lentils for more greenage. I only have 3 of them so it doesnt take much for them. Folks with oodles of chickens probably have a harder time supplementing.
can anybody tell me what BOSS IS?? And where I can find it?? I've read alot of posts and some chicken people seem to think it's better for chickens (more protein?) than Scratch. I was in TSC today and they looked at me like I was crazy and the one girl raises 200 turkeys a year and has had chickens for 10 years. I told her I'd read about in on BYC forums.
And you can get the BOSS at TSC in a big orange bag or an even bigger orange #50lb bag or a small clear bag, depends on the name brand you want
REALLY?? I bought the exact thing today, go figger!! Beautyful bag. I got 50# cause it was on sale at 22.99. Do they like the shelled seeds?? Those are expensive. Like $40something for 50#.
thanx for info

Mine wont touch them either way
They wont have anything to do with any type of bird seed silly things! I had read so many posts on chickens loving them that I bought some and nothing it sat on the ground till the wild birds came and got it.

now Im worried if I toss BOSS out to the chickens it will attrace unwanted birds to the yard. Should I be worried or not?? Maybe I should only toss out what they will clean up and then quit.

oh, well, thats news. I guess I'll TRY them on it and see how they react. If they don't like it, I'll save it for the wild birds feeder during winter. I have a huge standing feeder I put outside the kitchen window to attract chickadees, cardinals, Jays....nowhere near the chicken coop. But thats got lots of sparrows I need to go clean out again.
