chicken feed kill turkeys??

I guess it must depend on the breed of turkey.. I have only Royal Palms and I feed them exactly what the chicks get.. after they are throuh with the medicated starter, everything goes on to poultry layer crumbles.. I have almost 100% hatching rate with the turkey eggs.. BTW anybody who tells you they have 100% hatch rate with any type of bird eggs, consistently is....... ,,,,well,,,, not telling the truth......

Everybody has their own opinions and things work different for different people. There is something that has stuck with me over the years that an old man told me 30 years ago. He said if you want a bird to grow fast to eat you want it to grow out fast but if you want it for breeding and a long life let it grow out slow and naturally. I personally think he made some good points. For instance in a turkey growing the out on high protein diets could be big factor in bone problems. The muscle outgrows the heart capibilities and bone structure. Which could lead to to a short life and being crippled at an early age. A good example is on poultry farms. If they don't pick up my neighbors chickens in a 3 day window they start dying like flies and they feed high protein feed all the time much like what we buy. This man was not a scientist or educated but i always thought he had good horse sense. This is just food for thought. Not a debate.

They are sort of wrong, you can start turkey chicks with chick starter, but I would switch them to wild game as soon as possible. Not sure what there problem is as our orscheln's has wild game feed in stock. It's a starter/grower not a straight starter.

I would add a genaric viteman to there water. We use 1/4 teaspon per gallon of water. The difference between the chick starter and wild game starter/grower is not only the protein levels, but the trace minerals in the feed.

Tom

PS you can increase the protein levels by using hard boiled eggs for chicks for the first few weeks, as they get older you can add rolled oats, and cracked corn.

We feed only game starter to chicks and poults. The chicks feather far faster and the poults NEED it.

And they're right - appearing normal is not the same thing as being able to see adequate BONE development for their mature mass or being able to see inadequate organ development that can produce problems later.

Survive maybe, do well over the long haul? They make the feed different for a REASON - the health of the animal in the short and long run.

My turkeys made it to 5 months and now they have been dying off. They have been getting the chicken starter and cracked corn mixed with barley. Will any of this kill my turkeys. This is the first time for chickens and turkeys. Our chickens are doing great and from our first 12-14 chickens we are starting to get 4-5 eggs a day. Just need to know what we did wrong with the turkeys

Sorry for your losses.

Did one die recently? If so, I suggest you send it off for a necropsy or do your own necropsy.

We started with 8 turkeys and have had to butcher them way before we wanted to. Even at that we only got to butcher 3 of them.
