We picked up our first ever turkeys today. Have had chickens & still do. The only store we have here is orscheln's farm & ranch. Their big bags of game feed didn't come for 2nd week in a row but they had a small bag put up for us. While buying feed for rest of (my wifes) brood that I am kept busy with, they told us that the chick starter crumbles & chick layer crumble feed will kill them. Is this true??

Chick feed doesn't have enough protein in it for the turkeys. They grow so fast they have to have the extra protein. Ours gets 30% unmedicated gamebird starter.

you can supplement FOR A COUPLE DAYS with other protein sources - as i understand it - by giving them hard boiled eggs all crumbled up.

but you need expert advice - wonder where Steve is? Harp you out there?

oops sorry, these guys are a few days old & we are feeding the gamebird they put up for us. didn't want to take any chances.

I had mine on 20% chick starter for the 1st 5 weeks and then switched to gamebird. They are huge and just fine at 10 weeks

Mine are doing fine on 16%laying mash. I am not raising them for slaughter so i don't care about being extremely heavy. How ever i did run out of the mash this week and bought some starter so i will see if i can tell the difference.

My chickens, chicks, & ducklings all get turkey starter feed 26%. Sorry I can't help on the turkeys though.

Can they live on low ,protien yes. for the best start them on 24% to 28% protien medicated starter, for proper bone growth.

Just because they live on low protien, does not mean that good for them.

Heck you could raise one only on bread.

Feed the proper feed for the breed of bird.
