I have a RIR that's almost 4 months and soon to be laying eggs. Is there a certain type of feed to give them for laying ? Or is normal high protein feed ok?

They can be fed flock starter their whole lives as long as laying hens get all the calcium they want. This can be provided through oyster shells. If you want to switch them to layer, you should wait until they are laying regularly (around 22 weeks of age).

Best of luck!

Okay thank you so much for the info. Are there certain brands--good layer feed? (FYI I'm in CA)

We use Dumor. I wouldn't call that the best, but it is unmedicated, readily available, cheap, and our chickens seem to be doing pretty well on it.
