I found a smallish black speckled hen wandering outside the office. Her tail feathers are gone, her feet are really thick, she looks lost and doesn't seem to know how to walk very well. I tossed her some chicken feed and she ran away! I figure she probably fell off a truck, though most of those chickens seem to be white. The roosters aren't leaving her alone. I doubt she'd survive long so

I caught her easily and would like to take her to a friend who raises hens for eggs in her restaurant. Do I need to isolate her to make sure she doesn't have anything contagious?

I forgot how long but yes you should not put her with other hens yet. I hope someone who knows could tell you how long, I think maybe 90 days but I could be wrong.

Good luck!

I got a good look at her and she has not been well cared for. Her wings are really clipped, she has a sore butt with the feathers worn almost off, and missing feathers and rough skin under her wings. I found I can't care for her here in Habersham County, Georgia. My sister doesn't want any more chickens.

Check your craigslist you might be able to find someone that takes animals. We always have a listing for them here. If not just list her story and maybe someone will take her.

If you can keep her, she should stay separated from your flock for about 30 days, in case she has anything contagious. Sure hope you can find her a good spot somewhere - it really sounds like she deserves some better fortune than she's had so far.
