A couple of weeks ago one of my chickens got a cut on one of her toes. It seemed to have healed, but just today I noticed that the toe was looking blue. What do I do? Is this a serious problem?

Well, hopefully that one toe didn’t get some frostbite. If a toe gets wet and it is that cold, there can be a risk of toes or feet getting frostbite. If it is, it doesn’t look severe, but just keep an eye on it. This picture below from BYC shows some purple areas of frostbite.

Ok, I've set up a heat lamp in the coop for the birds. Hopefully tomorrow it'll be noticeably better

Heat lamps might not be necessary, but just keep any spills or open water bowls out of the coop. Most chickens can tolerate the cold, but humidity or stepping into water can cause frostbite. I would keep trying to determine if this is indeed frostbite or bruising.

Heat lamps are dangerous and cause coop fires. If you still decide to use one, it should be well secured and high enough not to burn skin. Many people use 2x4’s with the wide side up for roosts, so that birds can sit on their feet while roosting and keep their feet warm.
