Our 8 year old chook has a large swelling on her foot. Looks like a large slug but is smelly and bleeding. She cannot stand on this leg. Any help? I will send a pic soon

Hi

Welcome To BYC

Can you take her to a vet?
Photos will be helpful.

If the foot smells and is bleeding/oozing that's a sign of infection.
You can try soaking the foot in Chlorhexidine, Betadine or epsom salts to see if that helps. Advanced infections usually need antibiotics, vet care would be best. I don't know where you are located. Without seeing the foot, it's hard to advise, but usually the pus/infection need to be cleaned out well, soaked and treated everyday and antibiotics would be in order as well.

Thankyou, We bathed it, then took her to a vet. It was a large tumour & we chose to euthanise her over amputation. Very sad. She was very old for a chook-we estimate 8 years old!

I'm sorry for your loss.

8yrs is a long time for a hen! It sounds like she had a good life
