I'd leave the chicken alone. It belongs to someone and they might not like someone takin it.

Most likely one of those houses that doesn't look like the owners would have chickens does.

I would take it and get word out online, on the phone, wherever you can. People wouldn't blame you for stealing it if it was just on the side of the road and you try to give it back. Try to convince your mom it's the best thing for it. Plus if noone makes a claim (which they probably would) you'd have a free chicken! I wouldn't advertise the kind or people could fake that it's theirs. If the owner cares they'l ask and know wht kind it is.

Take it, put up a flyer in the paper at stores.
If that doesn't work you could cook a meal for less fortunate people, money wise.
