I have a window box that is 12" deep X 4' long X 8" high. Then fill it with dirt and plant grass seed in it. Then fashion hardware cloth over the top and the side so it is secure and the birds can not get into the dirt at all. Now the hardware cloth is a tunnel over the top and the grass is going to grow through it for the birds to eat and keep short to the wire as it grows through the mesh. You can do the same thing with seasoning like basil and others that they like. All you have to do is water.

Grape vines but this you have to protect until it grows up on the fence a bit or they eat it to the stubble.
