We recently went through a cold snap, and one of our chickens got pretty bad frostbite on both feet. Earlier today we noticed both legs were filling up with yellow puss underneath blisters. About an hour ago we noticed one leg started falling off and we're mortified.

The chicken has been inside for a few days so the immediate concerns of frostbite arent an issue, we're just trying to salvage the other leg.

What can we do to prevent the other leg from suffering the same fate?

Frostbite kills the tissue. It cannot regrow. If the blood supply to the other leg is compromised, your chicken may lose that leg too. Right now what you can do is treat with antibiotics if there appears to be a secondary infection. Also do not let the chicken in cold temps anytime soon. Areas that have experienced frostbite will get worse if warmed then allowed in freezing temps again. Keep your chicken warm and comfortable and wait it out. Other than that, there's not much you can do.

I've heard of some chickens losing both legs due to frostbite before. I have a rooster who lost part of his toe last winter due to frostbite. It would probably be easier for your chicken if it lost both legs instead of just one. Your chicken is probably in a lot of pain rate now for when one has frostbite then is put in a place where one can thaw out is a lot of pain. Keep a close eye on your chicken for any infections. Try to keep everything clean and keep everything bandaged up during the day. You may want to remove the other leg for one, it will be easier for the chicken to move around, and also there is the risk of infection by that one leg.
