So, we have a 2 year old barred rock hen that appears to be in the middle of molting. As you probably already know, temperatures in KY where at a record low these past few weeks. She has a couple spots on her back that currently have only tiny feathers growing in. They have looked pretty red and swollen these past few days. so my question is what do to and how to do it. TIA

It's very strange for a chicken to end up with frostbite on anything other than comb, wattles or toes, but anything is possible. Is there a chance she's getting pecked by others? They do seem to like to go for pinfeathers out of sheer curiosity sometimes. A pic would be a huge help, but if you're fairly certain she's suffering from the cold, if you're able to bring her in and allow her to slowly warm up, that's a big start. Slowly though. Frostbite in any animal from man to mouse and everything in between is treated largely the same way.

Thank you, it is now like 63 which is insanely warm. I spent about 2 hours watching them today and nobody is picking.
