My nine month old BR hen started acting kind of lethargic yesterday afternoon at around 3 pm, just sitting in a shaded area away from the flock and didn’t run up to greet me like usual. I thought she was just feeling a bit under the weather because she did eventually come out for grapes and I saw her drink water. Prior to this she had been eating and laying fine, and she didn’t feel like she had lost any weight.

I went back around 4:30 and found her already roosting in the coop with her feathers fluffed up so I brought her inside to quarantine her. I checked her vent to see if she was egg bound, didn’t feel an egg and there was no discharge. I put her in our “chicken hospital” dog kennel with electrolytes in water and scrambled eggs, but she didn’t touch either.

She had normal stool around 6 pm, then it turned into very watery diarrhea with streaks of white and yellow. By this point she was extremely lethargic and falling asleep on her feet. I made a vet appointment for this morning. She slept overnight, and every time I checked on her she would wake up but not stand.

I woke up this morning at 6:30 and took her out to clean up the kennel, and she snuggled into me like she normally does so I pet her for a few minutes. Then she very suddenly convulsed and passed.

I suspected coccidiosis, but she never got to the stage where she had bloody stools and it all happened relatively quickly. Now I’m wondering if I should still treat the rest of the flock with Corid or if it may be something else contagious that I should treat them for, or if it might be something not even contagious at all. I can’t find anything online that explains her symptoms AND how quickly they progressed.

any advice would be really appreciated. This is my first non-predator chicken death and I’ve had her since she was a chick so it’s hitting me hard, and I really don’t want to lose any of my other feather babies in the same way.

I'm no expert, but It sounds a lot like coccidiosis. I would go ahead and treat the rest with Corid to be safe.
