Hi! Whenever I open this nest box, if a particular chicken (Ruby) is in it, she growls and puffs up her feathers. I do not know why, none of the other chickens do this. She is not broody, she only goes in the box to lay her eggs. Is this normal? If needed, I can post a video of her doing this.

My mean ones do it too

Some chickens don’t like to be disturbed on the nest. Some of my birds growl at me but they are all nice about it. I had an Orpington once that would try to take your hand off if you reached under her for an egg. Mostly I try to leave them alone when they are on the nest and come back later for eggs.

My 2 sweetest girls turn into ferocious little dinosaurs when they are laying! They won’t peck or anything, but they most definitely want to be left alone. Ironically, my least friendly chickens will actually let me collect eggs from under them while they’re on the nest.

One here always growls haven't heard a cluck, buck or bugawk in her three years of being a hen just grrrrr, brrrr, grwoooll.
Iv'e concluded she's a hotrod model.:)
We have one that only growls, never clucks! She's not mean and is becoming more and more social now that she's laying. But I still have yet to hear any other sound than a growl. What gives?? 🤷

My Wheaten Marans hens growl and bite (as in grab, twist and try to ragdoll a piece of hand off me) when they're on the nest and it doesn't matter if they've laid yet or are sitting on an empty nest.
