Does anyone have any idea of what caused chicken to die? She was about 2.5 years and looked healthy.

Run is located under fruit trees. Could she have maybe eaten some moldy fruit which would have caused this?

I am new to chickens so please give me your opinions.

It depends on a lot of things. How long did you have her? Was she laying eggs? What breed was she. Some red sexlinks, golden comets, or other color "high production" egg layers will sometimes burn out after a couple of years of laying every day, or suffer from egg bound, where eggs get stuck in their reproductive tract. Heat is definitely very hard on all chickens this time of year. They need extra shade, cool water, and many chickens die during a heat wave. Her condition during the last week of life such as was she sitting around looking mopey, not eating, or having diarrhea would be helpful.

Thank you for the comment. She is a red sexlink. She was clawing at the ground while laying down like she was trying to take a dirt bath and then yellow watery liquid came from her mouth and quickly died. We had plenty of water and pools. would misters be a good idea for chickens on hot days?

I did not look to see if an egg was stuck before my husband buried her. Would a chicken cry or indicate pain if an egg was stuck?

Is there any supplement that I can give red sexlinks to make things easier on them?

Does the yellow liquid have significance?

Thanks Eggcessive.

Dont quote me on this because I am just guessing but I would say the yellow fluid would be bile in place of food vomit. If the poor girl was vomiting bile it means she was not eating very well. I always make sure my girls are eating so I know if there is something wrong or not. I am not saying it was you but I am saying I would make it a habit to watch and learn their behaviors so you will know when something is awry.
