2 year old chicken would not get up put chicken it to a cage gave it tetracycline hydrochloride after 2 days chicken is trying to walk but cant stay up for long it is using its wings to balance it self she is eating good drinking water , i understand that they dont show sickness untill it is to late but i think i might be able to save her she was also pooping green for 2 days the poop is still a little green with black might be bio , not sure if she was eating enough food , i give them scrath and cat food for protein , table foods , also it was very hot for 3 days hosed them down every day couple times a day plenty of fresh water and food plenty of shade just to hot for them. she is getting better but she still cant stand on her own sits all day moves only to feed and drink water this is the 4 day she is doing better but not walking yet , i decided to give the other chickens tetracycline also so they would not hopefuly get as sick as she is, also no mites no lice gust back feathers on all the chicken not their ,if it is due to the 100 degree days can it take weeks for the bird to walk on its own. they pick at each other in the rear dont know why, plenty room, think they just get board i hear alot about deworming chickens what do you think

Is that their complete diet- scratch and catfood? Or do they eat chickens pellets?

HELLO and thank you for responding, no pellets, just what i said and table foods every day from tune fish to meat loaf to eggs should i give pellets what does it have in it that they are not getting from scratch and daily table foods , update, poop is normal now with little white on top and a yellow outside from the antibiotics. should i give her apple cider vinager . it was almost 100 degree for three days here, do you think they need more vitimines and thank you ponce again for the helpfull advise

HELLO i understand protein is needed for the birds, they eat better than me ha ha , i have six hens they produce so many eggs that i boil them and feed them back to them ,the cat food i give them 3 to 4 times a week, dry food i mix with water and it becomes soft, they love it, but when the 100 degree days hit, they stoped laying so many eggs . i would stop laying to if it was that hot out. mouths open, wings spread to reduce heat. thank you so much for your help

The standard is to give pellets or a balanced mix of grains, seeds, vitamins and trace minerals. Catfood is high in sodium, and scratch is high in fat and low in nutrients. Neither is good for birds. I think you should head over to the Feeding & Watering Your Flock section of the forum and scan through some of the posts over there. That will give you some ideas on nutrition for birds. Pellets are given to birds because they are handy and easy. There are lots of other feeding options, though.

A balanced layer pellet or crumble food contains all the vitamins and minerals that your chickens need for good health and laying. Scratch is just a 'treat' food and should be given sparingly.

Table scraps are great but, unless you give them in the proper quantities and the proper nutrient load, your chickens are probably lacking proper nutrition.

I hope your hen continues to improve. The heat can play havoc with their systems. Maybe some electrolytes in their water would help.

thank you once again if it was not for people like you most of us would be lost GREAT SITE will goto store now and pick up pellets and vitimines for water
