Pictures attached and i do have or could take more!!! So last night I go to tend my chickens - it was my late work day 8am to 8 pm and I notice Henny Penny - my rescue, special needs and blind chicken has a runny but. Take her out to give her a warm soak and she has got a bloody looking start or prolapsed rectum. Call my vet who dabbles in chickens as there are not that many vets that do around here :( send her some pictures. She wants me to soak her butt clean it up with some dawn and put sugar paste on it - good for drying and anti - inflammatory properties.

So i did bath, sugar check
Moved her to a makeshift hospital - dog crate with Towles
She seems to be eating and drinking
Giving her protect and past as well as other non irritating food
Vet does want to check a fecal
Bond egg unlikely as she had just laid on 2 days ago
She's young and non consistent
Please help!!!!!! Advice?? Suggestions???

Yes, you are correct, it is prolapsed cloaca. Your vet's instructions were good, and in addition you should lubricate the vent opening and try to push the pink tissue back inside, so that it does not become dried out and die. Honey works as well as the sugar, and may be a good lubricant. Some also recommend Preparation H, but avoid the maximum strength one since it contains pramoxine, which is a numbing agent and one of the -caines that may be toxic to chickens. Below i the one to use to reduce swelling which the hone or sugar may do. The vent prolapse may come back out over and over, so it needs to be pushed back inside and held for a few minutes. A pressure diaper may also be used (see link.) Keeping the area cleaned will be a challenge. Your vet may insert a purse string suture to help it stay inside, and you can place the hen in a dark cage or room for 16 hours a day to stop her from laying eggs for the vent to heal. Prolapse may occur at the same time as egg binding, as a result of laying too large of eggs, and due to constipation. Here is a good link or two on prolapse:

i have treated a prolapsed vent before, make sure she stops laying. so put her in a dark room or off of food for a day. clean out all the stuck poop on the butt, then putt some hemeroid cream on it or sugar past. push it all back in. you might have to do this mroe than once :)

and feed your chicken yoghurt calcium is the best hing to strengthen her uterus muscles

Thank you everyone - I did everything you said and was able to get it back in. I also did some feeling around and I don't think she is egg bound but she is pumping her back end or atleast was - can this still be a symptom of prolaspe????

I had a pullet with prolapse, had to bath 2 day then tucked back in I used witch hazel which was a god send. Within 24 hours it had stayed in and my girl was having normal poops. I'm pretty sure the pulsating vent is normal

Ok I thought so....like I said I don't feel any masses in and around where the egg should be and it's been over 48 hours since this started. I think she's just like you said in pain trying to go to the bathroom. It did come back out this morning so gonna have to shove it all back in again and do a sling overnite she is in my house in the darkest corner with light filtering blankets - gave her some water with milk mixed and some fresh veggies. Gonna go out and get some liquid calcium and save a chick prob otic powder today
