Greetings All,

So I’ve recently noticed that one of my 10 month old pullets has a bizarre forked beak. Which is new as about a month ago (last time I clipped wings) it looked perfectly normal. She otherwise seems fine - active, eating and in a full messy molt with some of her coopmates. I did notice that the younger girls all have a very mild case of dry pox. My older hens had it years ago and now seem immune. I wonder if this has anything to do with it? In any case the bottom beak is significantly longer than the forked too which does not look injured, just warped. I’m wondering if I should attempt to file or trim the bottom to allow the top to close and grow more correctly or if I should just leave it alone as she seems to be eating just fine and no one is picking on her.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My inclination would be to leave it alone unless she starts to have problems eating.

I tend to agree with @sourland

The only thought I have is to take a very close look at the beak, especially the "forked" section to make sure it's not split up the middle. If it looks like it might split, then you may need to repair it, otherwise I would leave it be. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/01/repairing-chickens-broken-beak.html

Earlier this year one of my pullets injured her beak - it did look cracked close to the nostrils. I decided to just watch it. It started to heal and repair on it's own. Within a few weeks, I couldn't even tell she had an injury.
