The saddles are for hens that are missing feathers from their backs (and/or wings - wing protector) from either other hens picking at them, or roos mating and scratching their backs bare.
They work great. I've bought a couple of these for one of my hens that was injured & had an open area on her back. She's completely healed now & has grown back all her feathers. They're wonderful things... and they look cute, too.
My Phoenix has one of the 'butterfly camo' patterned ones with wing covers.
