Last year I decided to plant some herbs, mint and sage, next to my chicken coop. They were watered all summer with the misters installed on the coop. It started off OK but then the girls decided to dirt bathe near the roots and killed everything but the sage, or so I thought. The mint came back up this spring and I put a 2 x 4 around it with a cover over and added some oregano and thyme. For whatever reason the girls left the mint and sage alone this time but ate all the oregano and thyme. My latest effort was to add another 2 x 4 and cover with hog panel and netting. So far so good. Do your hens have a preferences about what herbs they go for? I also have rosemary, another perennial. I know that mint can be invasive but I’ll take mint in the pasture over weeds. Living plants near chickens is hard to do, any reason for the plants besides looks?
Since we have water out there via misters, I wanted to see if I could have something grow besides weeds. I know that herbs can be good for chickens and I use them in my cooking. We also have a large garden, high fence so the chickens can't get to it, and I keep my annual herbs closer to the house in pots.

Rosemary can be inedible to many things though I'm not sure I'd like to use herbs for cooking that has chicken dust on it.

If it's not chicken dust, it's something else. I always wash our produce and herbs before using. If you know how to grow a pristine garden please share your secret.
