I had 2 Australian Cattle Dogs and I would have never been able to use them for chickens. "Heelers" do exactly what their name says - nip the heels of cattle to move them. I have seen an ACD hanging like a Christmas ornament from the nose of a steer. They are awesome dogs and I don't doubt someone committed to the effort could train them for chickens, I just wouldn't be willing to take the losses during the training.
Border Collies (never had one) move herds / flocks with activity and their famous "stare", so they generally do better with feathered flocks. Australian Shepherds are great great dogs - most especially if you have kids!!
