Yes I got predators. But the chickens give me a a few good clutches a year so I'm never without a flock. I bring in a dozen fertile eggs every few years for fresh genetics. I have anywhere between 10-15 adults at a time in this pen. And the chicks and old birds that get set aside for the stew get their own temp pen for fattening up. This coop I speak of is the permanent roost. I don't keep extra chickens in there unless they just hatched and are very small still. These chickens are definitely not pets.
Except for A$$hole. Yes that was his name. My black Australorp rooster. He hated strangers coming up to the house just as much as I do. And that's ok with me.
Once the person was right next to me he would lose interest and wonder off. He was wicked smart.
