Our neighbors moved and left their chickens so we've recently adopted this guy/gal. We're new to chickens and don't have a clue what gender/age/breed s/he is. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Here's what we know: S/he survived outside with no coop living in a tree for three weeks, doesn't like being handled (but that could be how s/he was raised, not a breed trait), is pretty quiet - soft muttery clucking around the yard and loud clucks when upset, seems to be a good forager, and puts his/herself to bed at about 3pm.

Agree she's a game hen. They're scrappy little things, not stellar layers but make great broody hens and fiercely protective mommas.

Her breed traits probably allowed her to thirve the last few weeks. A more farm-type hen would have been more likely to have fallen prey to something, or not been able to find enough to eat to keep warm.
