Chicken illness in our flock

Hey chicken friends,

A couple of friends and I got 5 chickens in the early summer. We are having a lot of trouble with our Wyanndots getting ill and dying (our buffs are staying healthy). We've had 2 Wyanndots die, and one is sick and looking like she's not going to be around much longer.

We think they keep getting coccidiosis (lethargic, runny to watery poop, droopy feathers, the sick pullets not growing like the others) so have done some things to try to help, like raising their perch to keep them away from damp shavings in an unusually damp summer, treating them with Corid, putting apple cider vinegar in their water feeder, making nipple feeders to keep their water supply clean, cleaning out their shavings. But our 3rd one is sick now. The other 2 were pullets when they got sick and they both hung on for a while; this is the first adult one to get sick, and she's gone downhill fast.

HELP! Does anyone have any suggestions? Paying $50 for a vet visit is pretty much out of our budget. We're all pretty discouraged.

a sad chicken mama,
Gabe

Don't feel badly, many or most people here won't use a vet for their chickens. Fact is, most vets either won't see chickens or don't have much experience with them. Avian vets are few and far between, and quite expensive.

The fact that it's only one breed, and the other breed is fine, makes me wonder about genetics. However, in case you haven't run across this, here is a link to a handy description of common diseases:

Have the buffs been living with the wyandottes all this time? Or do you keep them separated? I too am wondering why the buffs are okay and the others not. Were the buffs vaccinated as chicks and maybe the wyandottes were not? Have they been getting mediated feed?

any chance they have worms?
