Question though -- why would someone spay a chicken?

One would spay a chicken if she had a laying disorder (they are usually eventually fatal).
I would definitely spay one of my chickens if I could afford it, she was strong enough to tolerate it, and she had a laying disorder (lost my first hen to a laying disorder in September).

Good point!
I guess it's like suffering from uterine polyps & having to get a hysterectomy. If any of my girls were suffering & I had the resources, I'd do the same.
