chicken injured by hawk. treatment tips helpful!

One of my ladies is molting and a hawk seemed to think she looked tasty and attacked her. Luckily she is still with us but got a nasty injury. It's not just a mere scratch and the cut is fairly deep. I have already cleaned it with soap and water but any extra tips would be very appreciated. She will kept inside to prevent infection, but is there a way i can cover it up too?

Good job that you washed it right away. Is she still bleeding? If so, I would apply gentle pressure with a sterile gauze until it stops. It might also benefit from a flush with sterile saline, which you can get at a pharmacy.Then I would apply neosporin or other triple antibiotic ointment. I’d be inclined NOT to cover it, but it’s hard to tell how deep it is. Is she self limiting her activity and not picking at it herself? Also, while she’s indoors, I would just use clean towels or puppy pads (not bedding) to help keep it clean.

Have you looked her over to ensure there are no other injuries? Is her breathing ok and has she started drinking, eating and pooping yet?
